The words

Samurai Girl is an RPG type side scroller that almost turned my eyes to jelly… am I getting old??

After the tragic death of her father by a rather fearsome giant robot, Samurai Girl sets off on the path of vengeance. (Note: By ‘tragic death’ I mean he gets stomped on… by the robot… squish… I guess that’s tragic right?).

Gameplay takes place over multiply environments with plenty of ledges to jump and monsters to slay. A virtual pad is used for all your moves/attacks which can cleverly be upgraded as you score more weapons and experience. Maybe the highlight of this game is the ability to raise your own Phoenix to help you in your general slaughter of bad dudes.

Now raising a Phoenix, if you didn’t know, takes a bit of time. Constant feeding is needed before you can convince the flaming bugger to be of any use… basically it takes a long time… and when I say long time I mean man, is it ever a long time. Its also expensive… time consuming and expensive are not two of my favourite things.

This time, along with having to repetitively kill off smaller foes with blow upon blow, can become tiresome. Hitting can also be a little haphazard and I seemed to be missing a lot of my sword strokes, even after my fingers were fully gameplay synced.

A handy little mini map is included and can be expanded. This is essential as this Girl moves around so fast that you sometimes hardly know where you came from or who you are about to battle with.

Priced at a mighty $2.99 Samurai Girl does provide a lot of on-screen play value… if you start it, you won’t be finishing it quickly… she may move fast but she still needs to repeatability whack the snot out of the same monsters again and again. The graphics need mentioning too… lovely retro spice!

Overall, fans of RPG type games will find this more than to their liking. It has a few twists, interesting mini-missions and upgrades, and if your eyes don’t fall out at the speed of it, it will last you a long while.
