The words

Hercules – Curse of the Hydra is a platform game with you in charge of one of the best known heros in mythology. With 15 levels installed, its a fair whack of a game.

Just like the story goes, our man/god Hercules has to fight, jump and stomp his way through a series of challenges to get to his ultimate battle with the nasty and vengeful Hera. Along the way he meets nicer God who give him help and tips and he also gets to pick up some rather violent, yet incredibly useful, weapons. Personally, shooting off the bow and arrow made me feel good.

Enemies abound in the form of large man eating beetles, wasps as thick as your thighs, insane humans who run at you with little regard for their own safety, and a grand total of 5 bosses.

Its difficult in these games to get the movement right, but the developers have done a fair job. Stick control for Hercules, thumb flick on the right side of the screen to slash/shoot, a jump function, weapons change and a nice camera angle button. The camera buttons takes a bit of getting use to, if you use it at all, but if you master them it makes the game smoother.

The only function which was seriously lacking was the ‘roll to side’, which is located left side of the screen (the same as the stick control). Supposedly it works with a flick, but for me it only reengaged movement.

Graphics are good but the colouring feels a little too muddied sometimes, but otherwise its a nice job. The AI characters could do with a little more intelligence, but in essence this is a real hack and slash fest as opposed to finesse, so it doesn’t matter too much.

If you’re a fan of 3D platformers, you couldn’t go wrong with this. The music adds a lot of atmosphere and overall its an engaging game. Its nice to have this as an option to yet another zombie bloodfest.
