Captain Bombom by Toropot

A new style of 3D shooting game

It happened in a supposedly happy vacation.

Captain Bombom left front fort R-69 (frontier outpost base R-69) for the space station. On the way, he found an unknown planet that was under Octopus Aliens’ assault.

“I don’t think this beautiful blue planet can make it till the Space Guards come!!!”

Therefore, Captain Bombom put on his blasting equipment and then got ready to stop the evil Octopus Aliens.

The words

If you’ve played MiniGore then Captain BomBom’s gameplay and interface is nothing new to you. The concept is simple – you run around shooting green little aliens and occasionally battle huge humanoid machines that shoot rockets chasing after your yellow PVC-clad butt.

The game’s fast-paced and bound to make you roll off your seat and quite possibly walk into a lamp post, if you’re the kind of person who plays games whilst crossing from one street to another (uhh… unless you’re quite the multi-tasking maven, don’t move and play, this isn’t one of those games you should be moving about whilst playing). Whilst you’re not given ammunition and weapons upgrade via supply crates, you can toggle between three different firing modes. There’s the usual double-barrel-esque laser shot, a Desperado shooting style which has BomBom’s arms spread wide and covering both sides and a third bomb-esque feature which drops lights (though it’s more like he’s dropping glowing poop) to the ground which explodes upon impact with an alien.

The main aim however is to stop the aliens from drilling into the planet and stealing its life essence (reminds me a bit of Final Fantasy 7 come to think of it) and apart from avoiding the green and red humanoid machines, you’ll need to avoid the big blue ones which, unfortunately, don’t die till the drills do.

If I thought easy mode or Happy Boy was difficult, you can imagine how much I struggled with Brave Mortal (medium) and Super Hero (hard). Suffice to say, I barely lasted five minutes before being overrun by aliens. In easy, the aliens are easier to kill and the bigger bosses are few in between. In hard mode, all’s fair in saving the earth and war. You’re likely to survive if you’ve got quick reflexes and good judgement (in knowing where to run and how to avoid and which shooting style combination to choose).

In the harder modes, you’re given help in the form of two gadgets. One of which pulls enemies into a vortex, along with your gunfire, and makes it easier to obliterate swarms.

High replay value although if you suck at it (like me, yes I’ll admit), you might want to stick to something that doesn’t give you an anxiety attack.

(Eds Note: The developer just dropped us a note to say new improvements are almost ready, including the addition of a new tank. You can also check out The Captains Facebook page.)
