“Tally ho!”

Never thought a stiff upper class British accent could grate on my nerves so much (and I really do love British accents). That’s the first thing you’ll face with the moment you load Mani Golf. As if needing to go through the tedious process of logging into Apple’s GameCenter wasn’t bad enough, you have to listen to repeat recordings of a Luigi-Wario crossover giggling and simpering as you score hole-in-one.

Minor peeves aside, the game is fun and relatively simple to play. You don’t have to be a golf maestro (I know, because the last time I tried golf I swung the Wii remote into the TV) to score a hole-in-one, Albatross or an Eagle. First few stages are idiot-proof easy. It’s like Worms Armageddon only with a golf ball, an irritating mascot/avatar and an equally annoying soundtrack. Subsequent stages require skill and flair and on some level, more experimentation and guesswork. Maybe it’s just me but the lay of the land can prove to be helpful in unorthodox ways.

True, the game can be addictive with a return-to-play factor in unlocking achievements (like getting all eagle for a ‘campaign’ and creating the most unbelievable game plays) and kicking butt on the leaderboard (of which right now I’m barely skimming the surface). Your achievements and accomplishments are logged into Apple’s Gamecenter which not only compares your skills, scores and abilities with your friends, but also with other Mani Gold players.

Recommended play? Muting both background music and narration and making sure that no one else is around when you do your happy-jig-dance when you score a hole-in-one.

(Editors note: An iPad version is on the way)
