The words

I always find Doug Davies apps a little strange. Previous products like Tramp Stamp and Jiggle Balls: Spikes looked like they shouldn’t have been as good as they are actually were. This is in no way a disparaging remark, it’s just those apps and their concepts had the strange ability to grab hold without you even realizing it and then never let go … it was almost a creeping shock to the system.

Jiggle Balls (for the iPhone) was a hit, but it almost went against all known laws: no high scores to achieve, no levels to bust, no real gameplay at all. It was after all just a screen with balls on it that made sounds… and yet it felt like a watching a lion take down a buffalo… without the violence… or the buffalo or lion… you get the analogy… hopefully…

Jiggle Balls HD has taken that very simple iPhone concept and given it a healthy dose of energy. Like its predecessor, there’s no gameplay as such… it goes something like this: Tap the screen to add a ball (or hold your finger to spawn multiple balls); flick the ball or balls across the screen; select ball type, their size, weight, bounciness and stickiness; and the coolest bit, add (or take away) our old friend gravity.

This is the app about nothing… nothing! Yet because it is, its really an app about everything, a total contradiction; mindless but stimulating, silly but serious, for no-one but for everyone. I guess therein lies its genius, its up to you where you take it, what to use it for, its open source gameplay.

Guaranteed: I can’t recall which part of the brain deals with time perception, but I will tell you that Jiggle Balls HD will latch onto it and the world will slowly fade…but you’ll have a big smile on your face when it does.

(On a side note, a particularly good app for kids, either educationally or as a distraction).

What’s the deal with Jiggle Balls? I mean… it’s a ball and you jiggle it… what’s up with that? Hahah… Seinfeld… thanks for the comparison (and compliment I think). Glad you guys enjoyed it. Look for an update soon with BOMBS… yes, that’s right I said… BOMBS!

  2. [...] the apps quirkier and better value, but they often have a fun retro feel running through them (see Jiggle Balls HD by Doug Davis and PongVaders by Koduco as fine [...]
