The Words

If you’re old enough, you’ll remember Nintendos ‘Game and Watch’ series of games , with such classics as Donkey Kong, and my personal favourite, Octopus, then this will be a trip down memory lane. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, then you’re from a different generation… but back in the days these games were king. Nintendo managed to make an affordable, portable game for the masses and consoles of today owe a lot to these pioneers.

The GW Series pays homage to those bygone days. Its hard to rank this app because it so closely resembles the original games in feel and style, its really impossible to find fault.

The games are obviously seriously dated now, and possibly those who never experienced the original G&W games won’t see the point. Those with a need for a nostalgic fix might see it differently. To be honest, I found them dull very quickly… but it was cool to see them in a new rebirth. However I will temper my comments with these thoughts:

1)   Serious retro gamers will love it

2)   These are extremely well made games especially in terms of graphics

3)   Younger kids LOVE them

4)   For the price, you get 6 games…that is excellent value (games can also be purchased individually and one, ‘Escape’, is free)

5)   Bring them out in the pub and people will start talking about the games they remembered from back in the day (I totally forgot about ‘Parachute’ until a friend reminded me)

So with these 5 points in mind, I have no choice but to rate it highly, while leaving the ‘Game Play’ score mid-range because I suspect this is definitely a set of games that might not cross the generational gap very well… but I hope so.
