The Words

TonePad is listed under ‘Music’…they boldly state I can discover the inner musician in me. I’ve only come close to being musical twice…once when I stood on my friends’ guitar and once when a DJ threw a record at my face. However, I didn’t let this wee fact stop me as I took my vast musical abilities and wandered into the forbidden zone.

Tonepad lets you create small snippets of music by highlighting buttons on a 16×16 dot matrix. The dots at the bottom the screen produce lowers sounds, the tops ones higher sounds. Highlight the dots you want and TonePad plays them on a loop. Simple enough.

And therein lays the beauty. Like all good apps, it’s simple but works like honey. I love honey. TonePad did what no high school musical teacher could; it made me feel like I’ve got some rhythm in my bones.

A cool thing about TonePad is it lets you save your creations, and then upload them to iTunes. There you can sync with your iPhone to make a ringtone. This weekend I’m dedicating myself to making the most annoying tone possible…a TonePad version of nails down a blackboard. Sweet!!
