The Words

Not big on sport apps myself but a friend gave me the heads up about Backbreaker.  You take charge of a running back as he charges down the field to the goal line. In your way, numerous angry opposition players ready to crunch some bones. Using the accelometre you move side to side down the field, with buttons on the side allowing you to juke and spin. Miscue your moves and you get clobbered.

The game has two modes: Endurance and Challenge and both are insanely good.  Backbreaker locks you into to game play and never lets go. Taking hits from the opposing players actually made me shout at my defenseless iPhone in frustration at my early lack of skill (this also had the added benefit of clearing people around me while I sat on the subway).  This game is a keeper and well beyond its 0.99c/0.59p price tag.
